Small adventures. Wonderful Wales.

Bring Welsh castles, colourful harbours, mountain workshops and kitchen discoveries to your family table. Little Food Explorer: Wales is a richly illustrated 74-page A4 activity book for children aged 8–12 with an adult helper, combining cooking, creative making, observation and playful problem-solving.

This edition features 31 new illustrations, six illustrated place stories and twelve two-page discovery missions. Detailed painted scenes, warm colours and clear magazine-inspired layouts make it inviting to browse, read and use together. Choose one small project or enjoy a series of family afternoons.

Six places to spark a new idea

Discover Cardiff / Caerdydd, St Davids / Tyddewi, Tenby / Dinbych-y-pysgod, Aberystwyth, Conwy and Llanberis. Each place feature pairs a large illustration with a short story, close-looking questions and a creative prompt. Follow museum clues, notice architectural patterns, explore harbour colours, meet the idea of a writer’s draft and think about towers, tools and slate wagons.

A Wales learning map connects the six places, while links within the PDF take you from a place story to a related activity. Every mission can be enjoyed at home; travel is not required.

Four recipes, with a picture for every step

  • Welsh cakes: shape sixteen currant cakes and investigate how their two sides cook.
  • Bara brith: soak dried fruit in decaffeinated tea overnight and bake a fruit-rich loaf.
  • Alcohol-free Welsh rarebit: explore a thickening cheese sauce and make four topped toasts.
  • Glamorgan sausages: combine leek and cheese, shape eight vegetarian sausages and discover a crisp breadcrumb coating.

Each cooking adventure includes ingredients, equipment, planning notes, eight pictured steps, clear adult and child roles, ready checks, allergens and storage guidance. Four kitchen investigations encourage children to predict, observe, sketch and explain. Plan ahead for bara brith’s overnight soak and the sausages’ chilling time.

Twelve illustrated missions with room for your ideas

Every mission has its own illustrated introduction and separate working page, with materials, detailed instructions, writing or drawing space and prompts to take the idea further.

  • Explore and observe: make a six-place pocket atlas, compare simple beak-like tools and curate a tiny household museum.
  • Build and test: compare paper columns, investigate two ramp surfaces and solve a paper slate-train loading puzzle.
  • Create and tell: invent a dragon retelling, write an original WALES poem and weave a paper keepsake.
  • Discover nature and weather: model a drop’s water-cycle journey, compare scaled seabird wingspans and present an imaginary forecast using Welsh words.
