Wild shores, kitchen stories and a cabinet full of discoveries. Join Mila, Theo and Aunt Jo in Little Food Explorer: Isle of Skye – Wild Shores & Kitchen Stories, an expanded 80-page illustrated book for ages 8–12 with an adult helper. Original stories, atmospheric island scenes and hands-on activities bring a little of Skye to your kitchen table.
Inside the new illustrated edition
- 12 connected original stories following three curious explorers as they collect drawings, ideas and questions.
- 34 new illustrations, including character scenes, island details, food artwork and kitchen investigation vignettes, with redesigned magazine-style pages.
- Four recipes, each with eight illustrated steps: Scottish Oatcakes, Island Vegetable Broth, Island Salmon Fishcakes and alcohol-free Raspberry Cranachan.
- 32 illustrated cooking steps and four kitchen investigations, with ingredients, equipment, adult and child roles, ready checks, allergen guidance and storage notes.
- 12 discovery missions and 12 notebook moments: try a delivery-grid puzzle, investigate a changing hillside, classify coastal creatures, weave a paper check, decode lighthouse rhythms, graph pretend tide data, plan a fictional ferry day, explore a sea food web, share oatcake fractions, read fossil clues, compare paper and foil cup covers, and make an island postcard.
- Six real Skye places to discover: Portree, the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, Dunvegan Castle and Gardens, An Corran at Staffin, and Neist Point.
- A shopping list, equipment guide, session planner, explorer passport, answer guidance, family sharing activity and completion certificate.
Read, cook and explore together
Follow the stories in order or choose one small adventure at a time. Children can practise measuring, fractions, observation, reasoning and creative thinking. Every practical activity works at home; visiting Skye and tasting foods are optional.
The characters and adventures are fictional, with checked place and science facts presented separately. Recipes combine Scottish favourites with original island-inspired family adaptations. Invented routes, tide readings, timetables and other learning models are clearly marked and are not travel or navigation advice.
What you receive
One 80-page A4 PDF download. Read on screen or print selected activity pages at home at 100% scale. Keep devices safely away from food, water and heat. Worksheets are designed for handwriting. No physical book, ingredients or equipment are included.
Adult help is essential. Adults handle heat, sharp tools and marked tasks, check ingredient labels and allergies, and confirm safe cooking and serving temperatures. Recipes are source-informed and desk-reviewed, but not physically kitchen-tested. Images are AI-created illustrations of imagined scenes, not documentary photographs or exact site views.
