A Brighton adventure to read, cook and make your own. Meet Mila, Theo and Aunt Jo in The Book of Small Discoveries, the expanded 80-page edition of Quesbo Little Food Explorer: Brighton. Original stories, detailed illustrations and practical activities bring seaside curiosity to your kitchen table. Designed for ages 8-12 with an adult helper.
Inside your printable pack
A new storybook cover and twelve character-led watercolor scenes follow one family adventure through Brighton-inspired places and discoveries at home. Each story leads into an illustrated notebook page and a hands-on mission, with clear instructions and room for children to draw, think and explain.
- 12 connected original stories starring Mila, Theo and Aunt Jo, plus four short kitchen stories, notebook prompts and carefully separated real-world facts.
- 4 detailed recipes, each with 8 illustrated steps: Seaside Fish & Potato Wedges, Sussex Picnic Scones (cheddar and chive), Brighton Berry Yogurt Lollies, and Sussex Apple Crumble Pots.
- 32 illustrated cooking steps with ingredients, equipment, adult and child roles, ready checks, allergen guidance and storage notes. The berry yogurt lollies take their stripe inspiration from Brighton rock sweets and use no boiling sugar.
- 4 food investigations with predictions, observations and space to record discoveries.
- 12 seaside discovery missions: explore pier bracing on paper, sort illustrated pebbles, read a fictional railway timetable, connect a rocky-shore food web, explore Pavilion-inspired symmetry, investigate salt evaporation, analyse a pretend beach-litter survey, compare shadows, make rock-sweet stripe fractions on paper, compare invented beach-width surveys, design a reusable picnic box and create a Brighton postcard.
- Six Brighton story stops: the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Palace Pier, West Pier, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Volk's Electric Railway, and Brighton shingle beach.
- A combined shopping list, equipment guide, session planner, explorer passport, answer guidance, family sharing activity and completion certificate.
Choose a little adventure
Make a recipe together, try a short mission or return to the pack over several sessions. Children can practise measuring, fractions, observation, reasoning and creative thinking. Every activity can be completed from home; travel, tickets and tasting are not required.
The recipes are original family adaptations inspired by seaside food, Sussex picnics and Brighton's colourful rock sweets. They are not presented as dishes invented in Brighton. Place cards are a themed story guide, not a geographical map or travel route; invented learning datasets are clearly identified.
What you receive
One 80-page A4 PDF download. Print selected pages at 100% / actual size, or read instructions on a device kept safely away from food, water and heat. Worksheets are designed for handwriting; the measuring activity includes a print-size check. No physical book, ingredients or equipment is included.
Adult help is essential. Adults handle heat, sharp tools and other marked tasks, check ingredient labels and allergies, and confirm safe cooking and serving temperatures. Recipes are source-informed family adaptations, desk-reviewed but not physically kitchen-tested. Images are AI-created teaching illustrations, not documentary photographs or exact views.
