Quesbo · An ocean character, handmade
A smiling face, a coral crown and a tiny dolphin become a beautifully layered felt charm to sew together.

Meet Ocean Buddy: an imaginary little sea character with a cheerful face, a crown of coral and leaves, and a dolphin playing among curling waves. Warm shell colours and cool turquoise felt make this a lovely project for children who enjoy choosing colours and arranging tiny scenes.
This sewn version turns the detailed pendant idea into a practical family make. The decorations are flat felt shapes with stitched details; two larger felt circles hold a light layer of soft stuffing. The finished charm has a gentle cushion-like squeeze and a short reinforced hanging loop.
Enjoy it over several unhurried sessions. Children can plan the colours, trace the larger pieces, arrange the design and help with filling. An adult handles the small cuts, needlework, hanger and finishing checks. You will learn how to build a layered picture before closing it into a soft little keepsake.
A shared project, one little detail at a time
Little maker
Choose the colours, trace the large circles, count and arrange the felt pieces, compare the work with the placement guide, and add small tufts of filling once the needle is detached and parked.
Grown-up helper
Prepare and use the needle, cut the intricate shapes and ribbon, sew all attachments and seams, reinforce the loop, fit any connector and inspect the completed charm.
Before you begin. Work at a clear table with close adult supervision. Count the needle before and after each session; keep it in a pincushion whenever you pause. Keep loose stuffing, small felt pieces and connectors away from younger children. The pendant is a decorative craft, not for toddlers or mouthing. Use its short hanging loop without a necklace cord, and put it aside for repair if a seam, loop or detail loosens.
Gather your ocean-coloured materials

| Material | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Soft felt, about 1–1.5 mm thick | Turquoise or teal: two pieces at least 13 × 13 cm. Scraps of sand/tan, dark teal, ivory, ocean blue, pale turquoise, olive or lime green, coral and orange, plus a little warm gold. Choose flexible felt that holds a small hand stitch. Keep matching scraps for a stitch practice. |
| Embroidery floss | Colours to blend with the felt, plus black, ivory and coral for the faces and shell details. Use two strands for most appliqué and embroidery; three for the outer blanket stitch. |
| Polyester toy stuffing | A small handful, added a tuft at a time. The body needs only a light fill. The face, dolphin and other decorations stay flat. |
| Grosgrain ribbon | One dark-teal strip, 70 mm long × 8 mm wide. Both ends will be anchored inside the back to make a short hanging loop. |
| Adult sewing tools | An embroidery needle, pincushion, fabric scissors and a few small sewing clips. Choose a needle that passes through the felt and ribbon without excessive force. |
| Tracing and measuring tools | Printed templates, paper scissors, pencil or suitable fabric marker, and a ruler. Measure the print-check square before cutting. Test any fabric marker on a scrap first. |
| Small sorting tray | A shallow tray or several small bowls. Keep the crown, face and ocean pieces in separate groups so nothing disappears between sessions. |
| Optional bag connector | One small, securely closing connector, fitted by an adult. Only needed for attaching the finished pendant to a bag. It is not part of the soft body. |
Your measured cutting pattern
Print each pattern sheet at actual size and measure both sides of its calibration square: 50 mm on sheet 1 and 20 mm on sheets 2 and 3. If the square does not match its labelled size, adjust the print scale and print again before tracing. The measured templates determine the cutting sizes; illustrations show the design and sequence. Keep every felt decoration at least 8 mm inside the outer edge of the front circle. Do not add a seam allowance.
Open each full-resolution sheet below and save it before printing on A4 paper. Use actual size / 100% where available; print settings vary, so check both sides of the labelled calibration square. Do not trace from a screen or a scaled preview. No extra seam allowance is needed.

Practise the small stitches first
Prepare a short, manageable thread
An adult cuts about 35–40 cm of floss. Separate the required strands one at a time, bring them together, thread the needle and knot one end. Leave the other end free. Keep knots on the reverse of the work, where they will later be hidden. Change thread before it becomes too short to control comfortably.
Whip stitch: hold a felt shape flat
Bring the needle up through the backing just outside the shape. Take it down through the shape and backing about 1–2 mm inside the edge, then come up a little farther along, just outside the shape again. Continue with small slanting stitches, about 2–3 mm apart. Use the smaller measurements on narrow details. Pull only until the thread rests on the felt; tight stitches make small pieces curl.
Backstitch: draw a line with thread
Make one short stitch, bring the needle up a stitch length ahead, then go down at the end of the previous stitch. Repeat to create a continuous line. Use tiny stitches around the smile and spiral. The same stitch makes the rectangular ribbon anchor, with every stitch passing through both ribbon ends and the back felt.
Satin and straight stitches: eyes, veins and shells
For a small pupil or the filled mouth, place short black stitches close together across the marked area, keeping them flat. Add one tiny ivory highlight to each pupil. A straight stitch is simply a short line from one point to another: use several to suggest a leaf vein or the fan-shaped ridges of a shell.
Blanket stitch: join the two circles
This edge stitch joins both felt layers and leaves a line of thread along the cut edge. Keep stitches about 3 mm deep and 3 mm apart. The needle passes through the loose thread loop before you tighten each stitch. Practise on two scraps first; the full sequence appears in step 17.
Finish a thread without a loose tail
On an open flat piece, the adult secures the thread on the reverse with small anchoring stitches and a close knot. Trim the tail neatly. On the final stuffed body, tie close to the seam and bury the remaining thread between the layers as described in step 19.
For another view of the needle movements, see DMC’s stitch guide. Practise first on scraps with the adult handling the needle.

Trace and cut the two soft circles
Child traces · adult cuts

Check the printed calibration square, then cut out the 120 mm circle template. Lay it flat on the reverse of the turquoise felt and let the child trace around it. Repeat for the second circle.
The adult cuts with smooth movements, turning the felt as needed. Stack the two circles to check their edges match, trimming only obvious uneven spots. Choose one for the decorated front; put the plain back in your tray until step 14.
Ready to move on? You have two matching circles, each about 12 cm across.
Cut the pieces and plan the whole design
Adult cuts · child sorts and arranges

Cut the paper patterns first, then trace the felt pieces in the quantities listed. When tracing on the reverse of the felt, turn an asymmetric paper pattern face down so the finished dolphin faces the right way. The adult cuts the small shapes, keeping coral branches and wave arms broad rather than trimming them to fine points.
Arrange all the pieces loosely on the front circle, following the placement guide. Put six leaves and three corals at the top, two side leaves on each side, the face in the middle and the dolphin and waves below. Add the two shell cheeks, forehead disc and bottom shell to check the overall balance.
Keep an 8 mm clear border around the entire scene. Take a quick photo of your arrangement. Move the loose pieces back into groups in the tray, leaving the six crown leaves ready for the first stitches.
Ready to move on? Every piece is counted and the full scene fits inside the clear border.
Sew the six crown leaves
Child arranges · adult stitches

Place the six green leaves in a fan across the upper part of the front circle. Check the placement guide so their lower ends will be covered by the face later and their tips remain inside the clear border.
With two strands of matching thread, the adult whip-stitches the leaves to the front. Secure each exposed edge, taking smaller stitches around pointed tips. Add a simple central vein with a straight stitch if you wish. Knot off on the reverse of the front.
Ready to move on? Six leaves lie flat, with no loose tips reaching towards the outer seam.
Add the three coral branches
Child chooses colours · adult stitches

Set the three coral pieces over the crown leaves, using a taller-looking arrangement in the centre and balancing the two sides. Leave some green visible between the coral branches.
The adult stitches around each coral shape, passing through the layers beneath. At an inward corner, turn the work and take a small stitch close to the corner instead of pulling the branch sideways. The narrowest felt parts should remain at least 4 mm wide. Secure thread ends on the reverse.
Ready to move on? There are three flat coral pieces, and the branches do not curl or lift.
Stitch the four little side leaves
Child counts and places · adult stitches

Arrange two small leaves down each side of the future face. Use the placement guide and briefly lay the tan face circle in the centre to check how much of each leaf will show. Lift the face away before sewing.
Stitch the side leaves to the front with matching thread, keeping them flat. Their inner ends may sit beneath the face, but their exposed tips still need securing. Check the outer clear border again before moving on.
Ready to move on? Two side leaves appear on the left and two on the right, with room for the face between them.
Build the brows and eyes on the separate face
Child positions · adult stitches

Place the separate tan face circle on the table. Position the single connected teal brow-and-nose piece using the face guide: its two arches sit above the eyes and the middle section points down between them. This is one solid shaped piece, so there are no tiny eye holes to cut.
The adult stitches its exposed outline to the tan felt with matching thread. Place the two ivory eye ovals beneath the arches and sew around them with ivory thread. Keep the face separate from the larger circle for now; this makes the next embroidery easier to manage.
Ready to move on? One connected brow-and-nose piece and two ivory eye ovals are attached to the tan face.
Give Ocean Buddy a cheerful expression
Child chooses expression · adult embroiders

Lightly mark a small pupil on each ivory eye. The adult fills each pupil with short black satin stitches and adds one tiny ivory highlight. Keep the stitching compact and flat, leaving some ivory visible around the pupil.
Mark the small crescent-shaped mouth from the embroidery guide below the nose. Backstitch its outline with black thread, then fill the little mouth area with short black satin stitches. Add a few coral stitches inside the lower part for the tongue detail. Check the expression before knotting off on the reverse; moving a smile by only a little changes the character’s mood.
Ready to move on? The pupils, highlights, smile and tongue are made from secure thread stitches.
Attach the face over the crown bases
Child checks position · adult stitches

Put the completed face on the decorated front, referring to the placement guide and your layout photo. It should cover the lower ends of the crown while leaving the four side leaves visible around it. Check that the face is upright and the smile has space below it for the ocean details.
The adult whip-stitches around the face circle using sand-coloured thread, sewing through the layers beneath. Keep the front flat on the table as you check its shape. Secure the thread on the back; the entire pendant is still unstuffed.
Ready to move on? The face is centred, flat and firmly attached, with the crown emerging behind it.
Add two scallop-shell cheeks
Child places · adult stitches

Place one orange shell on each side of the face, with the fan-shaped edge facing out and the narrow base pointing towards the lower cheek. Check that the shells do not cover the eyes or smile.
Stitch around each shell with matching thread. Then add several short contrasting lines from near its narrow base towards the scalloped edge. Leave a small gap between the line ends and the felt edge. These embroidered fan lines give the shell its detail without adding more tiny pieces.
Ready to move on? Two shell cheeks frame the smile, with all their edges held down.
Make the little forehead spiral shell
Adult sewing · child follows the spiral

Place the small gold disc at the centre of the forehead, where the crown meets the upper face. Use the guide to keep it clear of the eyes and the short nose section. Stitch around the disc with matching thread.
With a darker gold or tan thread, embroider a simple spiral from the centre outwards using tiny backstitches. A loose, open spiral is easier to sew than a tightly packed one. Finish on the reverse of the front circle.
Ready to move on? The disc is secure and the spiral lies flat against it.
Prepare and attach the little dolphin
Child checks direction · adult embroiders and sews

Work on the separate blue dolphin first. Position its ivory felt belly crescent as shown on the template and sew around the crescent with tiny whip stitches. Add the small eye with a few black stitches. Secure the threads on the reverse. Both felt layers stay flat; the dolphin has no separate stuffing.
Position it on the lower left of the pendant, with its nose pointing right and its tail curving down towards the left. Try the three loose wave curls beside it to check the space, then remove the waves. Sew around the dolphin with matching blue thread, using small stitches at its fins and tail.
Ready to move on? The dolphin is secure and its face will remain visible above the waves.
Layer the three curling waves
Child arranges · adult stitches

Place the ivory curl on the left, the pale-turquoise curl near the centre and the dark-teal curl on the right, following the placement guide. Let the shapes overlap slightly where shown, while keeping the dolphin’s face and Ocean Buddy’s smile visible.
Sew the lower layer first, then the next, using matching thread. Follow every exposed curve, including the inside of each curl. Turn the work frequently and keep the stitches small enough to hold the curved edge without pulling it out of shape. Do not cut the wave arms thinner to make the curls more delicate.
Ready to move on? Exactly three curls sit flat across the lower front, with at least 8 mm of clear felt at the outer edge.
Finish the scene with its bottom shell
Child chooses placement · adult stitches

Set the remaining orange scallop shell at the lower centre, overlapping the wave bases as shown on the placement guide. Check that its bottom edge stays clear of the future body seam.
Sew around the shell and add the same fan-shaped thread lines used for the cheeks. Inspect the whole front while it is still easy to reach: stitch down any lifting coral tip, leaf, shell edge or dolphin fin. All decoration is now complete, so no further needlework needs to pass through the stuffed centre.
Ready to move on? The front has two cheek shells and one bottom shell, and every exposed decoration edge is secure.
Measure and position the short ribbon loop
Child measures · adult cuts and positions

Cut a 70 mm length of 8 mm-wide grosgrain ribbon. Fold it in half with the raw ends meeting and the ribbon untwisted. Place the plain back circle on the table with its inside face upwards.
At the top centre, lay both ribbon ends together so they extend 20 mm inside the circle from its cut edge. The folded loop should project about 15 mm beyond the top. Measure both distances and hold the ends with a sewing clip.
Ready to move on? Both raw ends overlap flat inside the back, and only a short loop projects outside.
Stitch the loop anchor through both ends
Adult sewing and check

Sew a small rectangle of backstitch through both stacked ribbon ends and the back felt. Aim for about 6 mm across and 12 mm down, with the top of the rectangle around 5 mm inside the circle’s edge. Each stitch must catch both ribbon layers.
Knot securely on the inside. The reinforcement stitches will be visible on the outside of the plain back; that is part of this construction. Support the felt and give the loop a gentle tug to check that neither end slips. The outer body seam will cross the ribbon again later.
Ready to move on? The rectangle anchors both ribbon ends, and the loop stays in place during a gentle check.
Match the circles and mark the filling gap
Child aligns · adult checks

Lay the back with its ribbon ends facing up. Place the decorated front on top with Ocean Buddy looking outwards. All thread knots and the ribbon ends should now be hidden between the circles, with the short loop emerging at the top.
Match the cut edges and hold them with sewing clips. At the bottom, mark a 35 mm section to leave open for filling, using two clips as reminders of its ends. The circles stay this way round throughout: there is no turning inside out.
Ready to move on? Front outside, knots inside, loop at the top and a marked 35 mm opening at the bottom.
Blanket-stitch around the body
Adult sewing · child watches the pattern

Use three strands of thread that match the turquoise body. Start at one end of the marked bottom gap. Hide the knot between the layers and bring the needle through the front about 3 mm from the edge. Take the thread over the cut edge to the back, then bring the needle through both layers at the starting point. Pass the needle through the loose thread loop before drawing it gently snug.
Move about 3 mm along the edge. Take the thread over the cut edge again, bring the needle from back to front through both layers, and pass it through the loose loop before tightening. Repeat this rhythm, keeping stitches about 3 mm deep and 3 mm apart. Remove clips as you reach them and avoid pulling the felt into ripples.
At the top, the adult stitches through both ribbon ends as well as the felt. Continue to the other marker and leave the 35 mm bottom gap open. Secure and trim the working thread on the inside, then detach and park the needle in the pincushion before the child helps with filling.
Ready to move on? The seam joins both layers and catches the ribbon; the bottom gap is open and the needle is detached and parked.
Give the pendant its soft centre
Child adds filling with an adult beside them

Pull the stuffing into little airy tufts rather than pushing in one firm ball. Feed a tuft through the bottom gap and use fingers to ease it towards the top and sides. Add a little more, then gently massage the outside to spread it evenly.
Stop when the centre is softly rounded, about 18–22 mm thick, and still easy to compress. Pinch the opening edges together: they should meet comfortably without stretching. Remove a little filling if the front looks domed, the decoration bends sharply or the seam feels strained.
Ready to move on? The body feels like a small soft cushion, with no hard lumps and edges that meet easily.
Close, secure and inspect every detail
Adult finishing and final check

The adult prepares a fresh thread, hides its knot between the layers and continues the blanket stitch across the bottom gap. Keep stray fibres tucked inside and match the existing 3 mm spacing. Check that every stitch catches both circles and that the last stitch meets the first without a small hole.
To secure the final thread, slip the needle under the last seam stitch without piercing the felt and leave a small thread loop. Pass the needle through that loop and draw it snug; repeat once to make a close, secure knot. Pass the needle between the felt layers and out through the back a short distance away, then pull gently and snip close to the felt so the end withdraws inside. Take care not to cut the felt or the seam.
Inspect the entire edge, the loop anchor and all the decorative points. Support the body while gently checking the loop and each appliqué edge. Repair anything that shifts, lifts or opens. Count and store the needle, then clear away loose stuffing and offcuts.
Ready to move on? The body is fully closed, the loop and decorations are secure, no stuffing shows and the needle is accounted for.
Hang your Ocean Buddy and enjoy a gentle squeeze
Adult fits any connector · child enjoys the finished craft

Hang the short loop from a suitable display hook, or let the adult fit a small securely closing connector for a bag. Check that the connector closes fully and does not cut or pinch the ribbon. Keep the finished charm free of long cords, heavy additions and dangling beads.
Rest Ocean Buddy in your palm and gently press the soft centre. It should spring back like a lightly stuffed cushion. Admire the little layers you made together, choose a name for the dolphin and decide which colour palette you might try next.
Ready to move on? The pendant hangs without strain and keeps its softly rounded shape after a gentle squeeze.
Three beautiful colour stories to try
Use the same measured pieces and stitching method for each version. Changing the colours gives the character a new mood while keeping the familiar crown, shell cheeks, dolphin and waves.

Coral reef
The original palette: turquoise felt, a warm sand face, coral and orange shells, fresh green leaves and an ocean-blue dolphin.
Seafoam morning
Seafoam circles, an ivory-sand face and apricot details create a softer coastal palette. Deeper teal stitches keep the small shapes clear.
Sapphire sunset
Sapphire-blue circles with a warm sand face, pink coral and shell accents, and cool aqua waves make a bright, playful version.
A little help if something feels tricky
A coral branch or wave arm feels too narrow
Before sewing, cut a fresh piece from the measured pattern and keep the narrow section at least 4 mm wide. A rounded, broader branch is easier to stitch than a fragile point. Use embroidery for finer detail.
A felt edge curls up
The stitches may be too tight or too far apart. The adult loosens or replaces them, then adds small securing stitches around the exposed edge. Keep the layers flat while checking the result.
The face looks crowded
Pause before attaching the face. Lay the shells and forehead disc in place again, compare with the placement guide and keep the eyes and smile clear. The lower waves should not hide the character’s expression.
The circle develops ripples
The outer seam may be pulling too tightly. The adult eases or replaces the affected blanket stitches so the thread rests along the edge without gathering it.
The pendant feels hard or the opening will not close
Remove some stuffing and tease the remaining tufts apart. The two edges should touch without stretching. If already closed, an adult opens a short seam section, adjusts the fill and resews it.
The hanging loop moves
Stop using the charm. An adult opens the seam as needed and checks that the anchor passes through both ribbon ends and the back felt. Reinforce it again, close the seam and recheck before use.
The details are taking a long time
Divide the project into three sessions: prepare the pieces and crown; sew the face and ocean scene; then make the loop, join and fill. Store the small pieces in a tray and let the child lead the colour choices between sewing stages.
Look after your little ocean
Keep the pendant dry and avoid rough pulling or repeated hard squeezing. If needed, gently spot-clean with a barely damp cloth after testing an inconspicuous area. Follow the felt and filling labels and allow the charm to air-dry fully.
Check the seam, loop and decoration edges regularly. Put the charm aside for an adult to repair if thread loosens or stuffing appears. Store it out of reach of children who may mouth it or pull off small parts.
